"Indivisible: Stories of an American Community"
Reprinted with permission from absolutearts.com

Oct. 11, 2000 — This exhibition presents museum audiences with the results of a major social documentary commission undertaken to examine the state of community in America today. Twelve states from Florida to Alaska were chosen as subjects for this look at grass roots democracy as seen through the eyes of the country's most distinguished photographers.

Working in the documentary tradition with strong personal visions, these photographers offer distinct impressions of their subjects that together create a tapestry of people and place -- the relationships, discipline, frustration, and accomplishments that describe the twelve case studies. Artists include Dawoud Bey, Bill Burke, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Lucy Capehart, Lynn Davis, Terry Evans, Lauren Greenfield, Joan Liftin, Reagan Louie, Danny Lyon, Sylvia Plachy, and Eli Reed. An interactive website can be found at http://www.indivisible.org.
